Why ball speed is the number to know

Golfers ask about clubhead speed because it is the number that gets quoted. It is the wrong one to build on.

Clubhead speed tells you how fast the head was travelling. It says nothing about how much of that energy reached the ball. Two golfers can swing at identical speeds and produce ball speeds fifteen mph apart, because one found the centre of the face and the other did not.

Ball speed already contains the answer to both questions: how fast you swung, and how well you struck it. It is a measurement of the outcome rather than the input, and outcome is what carries the ball.

The last column is the interesting one. It is not a projection of what you might achieve with practice. It is what the same swing produces once the launch angle and spin rate stop working against each other.

The gap between typical and optimised

Carry is produced by three things acting together: ball speed, launch angle and spin rate. Ball speed is the one you cannot fake. The other two are a fitting problem, and that is where the extra yards in the table come from.

The gap is proportionally larger at slower speeds, and the reason is specific: a slower swing tends to be launching too low and spinning too much at the same time. Both faults usually come from the same cause — a downward attack angle with too little loft to compensate — so fixing one fixes the other.

  • Too little launch usually means too little loft for your speed, or hitting down on the ball. The remedy is more loft, not less , and a higher tee.
  • Too much spin usually means a downward attack angle, a strike low on the face, or a shaft that is too soft for your transition.
  • Both at once is the classic amateur driver profile, and the most expensive one. It is also the most fixable.

Where the target windows sit

At 120 mph of ball speed you want roughly 14–17° of launch and 2600–3200 rpm of spin. At 150 mph you want 12–15° and 2200–2700 rpm. At 170 you want 10–13° and 1900–2400. Chasing the fast numbers at a slow speed is the most common way to lose carry.

Getting your ball speed

In descending order of accuracy:

  1. A launch monitor. Any fitting bay, most indoor simulators, and an increasing number of driving ranges have one. Ask for ball speed specifically; ten swings and an average is enough.
  2. A personal radar unit. The consumer devices are accurate enough for ball speed and are the cheapest way to track it over time.
  3. Back-calculating from your carry. If you know how far you actually carry it, the relationship in the table above runs in both directions. Around 200 yards of carry implies about 130 mph.
  4. Back-calculating from your total. The least reliable, but better than nothing. Divide total by about 1.11 to get carry, then read the table backwards. The tool on the shaft flex page will do this chain for you.

What moves the number

The figures above assume sea level, no wind, and normal ground. Real rounds are not like that, and the corrections are large enough to matter when you are comparing your numbers against a table.

  • Altitude. Thinner air is worth roughly two per cent of carry per thousand feet. A drive that carries 220 at sea level carries about 233 at 3,000 feet.
  • Temperature. Cold air is denser and a cold ball is less lively. Expect to lose several yards of carry in genuinely cold conditions, and more if the ball itself is cold.
  • Wind. A headwind costs more than a tailwind gives, and the effect grows with spin. This is one reason a high-spin flight is expensive: it is the flight that suffers most into wind.
  • The ball. Ball construction changes spin more than it changes speed. Compression matters far less than the marketing suggests once you are inside a normal speed range.

None of those change what your equipment should be. They change what you should expect from it on a given day, which is a different question and a useful one to keep separate.

Using the number once you have it

A ball speed figure is only useful if it changes a decision. There are three it should change.

It tells you whether a distance problem is a fitting problem

Compare your actual carry against the typical column in the table. If you are close, your launch conditions are broadly fine and buying a new driver will return very little. If you are ten per cent short, the shortfall is in launch angle and spin, and that is a fitting problem with a known answer rather than a swing problem with an uncertain one.

It sets realistic expectations for the rest of the bag

Driver ball speed scales through the set. A golfer at 130 mph of driver ball speed is not going to carry a 7-iron 175 yards, and building a yardage book on borrowed numbers from a video is how golfers end up short of every green. It tells you when to stop buying speed

Above roughly 150 mph of ball speed the optimisation gains shrink, because the launch window narrows and most golfers at that speed are already inside it. Below 120 the gains are largest and the cheapest to obtain, because almost everyone in that band is under-lofted. Knowing which side of that line you are on tells you whether your next few hundred dollars should go on equipment or on lessons.

What to shop for
