What Should Your Irons Actually Carry at Your Swing Speed?

It depends on two things, and every chart online gives you only one. At 90 mph of driver speed a 7-iron carries about 142 yards in a strong-lofted set and about 128 in a players' set — same golfer, same swing, 5.5 degrees of loft between them.

Why every iron distance chart is wrong for someone

Search for average iron distances and you will find dozens of tables listing a club number against a yardage. Every one of them is wrong for a large share of the people reading it, and the reason is that they list a number rather than a loft.

A club number is a label. It tells you where the club sits in a set. It does not tell you the loft, and loft is what determines the distance. Over the last two decades manufacturers have strengthened iron lofts by four or five degrees while leaving the numbers on the sole alone, so a 7-iron today is what a 5-iron was thirty years ago in some sets.

A 7-iron is 28 degrees in one modern set and 34 in another. That is nearly two clubs of difference wearing the same number.

This is exactly the same problem that makes wedge lofts depend on your pitching wedge and makes hybrid numbers meaningless without your lofts . It has one solution: start from the set you own.

Read the two carry columns side by side and the strong-lofted set looks longer at every club. It is — and that is precisely the point of the design. But look at the top and bottom rows to see what it costs.

  • At the bottom: the strong set's pitching wedge carries further, which means a bigger gap down to the first wedge below it. That is the yardage hole covered in where the yardage hole sits in your wedges .
  • At the top: the strong set's 3-iron is at a loft no manufacturer would sell as a 3-iron, which is why most such sets do not offer one. That slot becomes a hybrid.

Neither set is better. They move the same fourteen slots around, and knowing which one you own is what makes the rest of the bag decidable.

Reading the gaps, not the distances

The absolute distances are the least useful part of the table. What matters is the spacing.

Notice that the gaps are not even, and should not be. Long irons sit closer together in yardage than short irons do, because loft steps narrow at the top of the set and because launch efficiency falls away. A typical set spaced correctly shows:

  • Long irons: five to nine yards apart.
  • Mid irons: ten to fourteen yards apart.
  • Short irons: twelve to fifteen yards apart.

What you are looking for is a step that is much bigger than its neighbours, or one that has collapsed to nothing. Both are problems, and both are invisible until you lay the numbers out.

Two adjacent clubs going the same distance

If your 4-iron and 5-iron carry within a few yards of each other, you have run out of the clubhead speed needed to launch the longer one. That is not a swing fault — it is the signal to replace it, and which iron a hybrid actually replaces tells you what to put in its place.

Measuring your real distances

The table above is a model. Your actual numbers are the ones to club off, and getting them takes one session.

  1. Use carry, not total. This is the single biggest source of error in an amateur's yardage book. Range balls run a long way on dry turf and stop dead on a soft green — carry against total, and which one to club off .
  2. Hit ten with each club, not three. Discard the two best and the two worst.
  3. Average the remaining six. Not your best — your best is a shot you hit once in twenty and cannot plan around.
  4. Do it with your own ball if you can. Range balls typically carry several yards shorter than a premium ball, and the difference is larger with the shorter clubs.
  5. Write down the gaps, not just the numbers. The gaps are what tell you whether the set is working.

Where the set stops working

Every iron set has a point above which the golfer cannot launch it, and that point moves with clubhead speed rather than with the number on the club.

The test is descent angle, not distance. An iron that carries a long way and then runs twenty yards through the back of a green is not a club you can hit into a green. Watch ten shots with your longest iron and count how many would have stopped. If it is fewer than four, that club has become a liability regardless of how far it goes.

Rough guidance: below 85 mph of driver speed, most golfers should stop at the 5-iron, and at the 6-iron in a strong-lofted set. Between 85 and 95, the 4-iron. Above 95, the 3-iron is playable for many. Above 105 it is a preference rather than a limitation.

Whether strong lofts are worth it

Every golfer who reads the table above asks the same question: if the strong set is longer at every club, why would anybody buy the other one?

Because distance at a given club number is not the thing that scores. What scores is having fourteen clubs that cover a continuous range of distances, each of which stops where you aimed it. Strong lofts move distance around the set rather than creating it.

  • What you gain: more distance from the mid irons, which is where most approach shots are hit, and a lower, more penetrating flight that holds up in wind.
  • What you lose at the bottom: the pitching wedge is no longer a scoring club. It carries further than you want from 110 yards, and it opens a gap to the wedges beneath it.
  • What you lose at the top: the long irons become too strong to launch, so two or three of them stop working and have to be replaced with hybrids you now have to buy.
  • What you lose in the middle: descent angle. A 28-degree 7-iron lands flatter than a 34-degree one, and a flatter landing angle holds fewer greens — the whole point of an approach shot.

The honest summary: strong lofts suit golfers with enough speed to launch them and who play firm courses where a running approach is acceptable. Traditional lofts suit golfers who need height to hold greens. Neither is a better set of clubs, and both need the rest of the bag built around them deliberately rather than by habit.

What to shop for

If your set's gaps are uneven at the top, the fix is a hybrid rather than a new set. If they are uneven at the bottom, the fix is a wedge. Replacing the whole set to solve a spacing problem is the most expensive possible answer to the cheapest possible question.

How far should I hit my 7-iron?

It depends on your swing speed and on your set's lofts, and the second half is usually left out.
