Wedge Specifications: Lofts and Gapping

Wedge gapping is the one part of the bag where the right answer is fully determined by something you already own, and where almost everybody gets it wrong anyway. The pitching wedge at the top of your iron set sets the whole ladder. Until you know its loft, 52 / 56 / 60 is a guess dressed up as a convention.

Your wedge lofts

Pick the iron set you own. Everything below the pitching wedge follows from its loft.

161 sets from 15 brands, 2016–2025, every one confirmed against the manufacturer’s own published table. Pitching wedge lofts across them run from 38° to 47° — more than a full wedge of difference. If your set is not here, read the loft stamped on the sole of your pitching wedge and enter it below; that beats any figure a database can hold.

It is stamped on the sole of most wedges, and printed on the manufacturer's spec sheet for every iron set.

Specifications do not work in isolation. A driver loft that suits your speed is the wrong loft if your attack angle is steeply negative, and a wedge ladder is only correct relative to the pitching wedge above it.
