Why a Slow Swing Speed Needs MORE Driver Loft, Not Less
Below about 95 mph, adding driver loft adds carry distance rather than costing it. A slow swing does not generate enough ball speed to carry a flat, low-spin flight. Loft is what keeps the ball in the air long enough to travel. The instinct to buy a 9.5-degree head is the single most expensive equipment mistake a slower swinger makes.

Why loft buys distance at slow speeds
Carry distance is produced by three things acting together: how fast the ball leaves the face, how steeply it climbs, and how much it is spinning. Change any one and the other two have to compensate.
A tour professional carries the ball a long way on a relatively flat trajectory because the ball is moving at 165 mph or more. At that speed the ball stays airborne on a shallow launch, and every extra degree of launch angle costs more in added spin than it gains in height. That is why low loft works for them.
At 85 mph the ball is leaving at about 123 mph, and there is no shallow trajectory that keeps it up long enough. The ball needs to be launched into the air, and the only two ways to do that are loft and an upward attack angle. Take loft away and you get a lower, shorter shot that lands hot and runs into whatever is in front of it.

Read down the loft column and the pattern is the opposite of what the marketing implies: the slower the speed, the more loft the window calls for. Nothing in that table is a preference. It is what the ball needs in order to stay in the air.
The target launch window
Loft is a means, not an end. What you are actually trying to hit is a launch angle and a spin rate:
- Under 85 mph: launch 14–17°, spin 2600–3200 rpm. High and relatively spinny, because the spin is holding the ball up.
- 85–95 mph: launch 13–16°, spin 2400–3000 rpm.
- 95–105 mph: launch 12–15°, spin 2200–2700 rpm.
- Above 105 mph: launch 10–13°, spin 1900–2400 rpm. Now the classic high-launch, low-spin advice starts to apply — and only now.
Most of the driver advice written online describes the bottom row and then gets applied to golfers in the top row. That mismatch is the whole reason this page exists.
Attack angle moves it further than speed does
If you can obtain one number from a launch monitor, make it attack angle rather than clubhead speed. It changes the loft answer more than swing speed does, and almost nobody knows theirs.
Attack angle is whether the clubhead is travelling upward or downward through impact. Hitting down on the ball strips dynamic loft at impact: the face may be 10.5 degrees, but the ball leaves as though it were struck with considerably less. That loft has to be bought back statically.
The practical rule
Every degree of downward attack angle needs roughly half a degree more static loft to restore the same launch. A golfer hitting four degrees down at 90 mph needs about two degrees more loft than a golfer hitting level at the same speed — 12.5 to 14 degrees rather than 10.5 to 12.
The reverse is where free distance lives. Hitting up on the ball adds dynamic loft for nothing, which means you can play a lower static loft and hold the same launch angle with less spin. Same height, less spin, more carry. That is the mechanism behind every "tee it higher and move the ball forward" tip you have ever read — it is an attack angle change, and it is worth more than a new driver head.
Getting the attack angle without a launch monitor
- Tee the ball noticeably higher than you currently do — half the ball above the crown at address.
- Move it forward, off the inside of your lead heel rather than the middle of your stance.
- Set up with your lead shoulder a touch higher, so your sternum sits behind the ball.
- Check the tee. A tee knocked flat or launched forward means you are still hitting down. An untouched tee means the head reached its low point behind the ball, which is what you want.
The loft you are afraid of
There is no polite way around this: a lot of golfers play too little loft because a high number on the sole looks like an admission. The cost is measurable, and it is large.
A golfer swinging at 85 mph with a level attack angle, playing a 9.5-degree head instead of the 12-degree head their numbers call for, will typically launch four to five degrees too low. That is worth fifteen to twenty-five yards of carry — more than any driver head released in the last decade has claimed to add over its predecessor.
It is also worth noticing who this affects most. If your speed is dropping with age, the correct response is to add loft as speed falls, not to keep the loft you played at thirty. The same is true if you are coming back from injury, or if the winter has taken a few mph off.
What loft cannot fix
Loft sets launch. It does not fix a slice, and adding loft to reduce sidespin is an indirect fix that costs you the correct launch window. If your problem is direction rather than height, the answers are face angle, draw bias and shaft — start with whether your shaft flex is right for your transition before you touch loft.
What to do with an adjustable hosel
Most drivers sold since about 2012 have an adjustable hosel worth roughly two degrees either side of the stated loft. That is genuinely useful, and it is worth two things you should know before you rely on it.
- Adding loft usually closes the face. On most designs the two move together. If you add two degrees of loft and start hooking it, the loft is not the problem — the face angle that came with it is.
- The stated loft is not always the delivered loft. Manufacturing tolerance on a driver head can be a degree either way, and a used head may have been left in a non-neutral setting by its previous owner. Check the setting before you judge the club.
The practical consequence when buying used: a head whose stated loft is within two degrees of your window is a candidate, because the hosel closes the gap. Below that, buy the higher-lofted head — it is far easier to take loft out of a 12-degree head than to find two extra degrees in a 9.5.
What to shop for
Search for the specification rather than the model. A 12-degree head from 2019 launches the ball the same way a 12-degree head from this year does; the difference between model years is smaller than the difference between the right loft and the wrong one.

Why does a slower swing speed need more driver loft?
